Arakawa Sunset Paddle and Hot Spring
Difficulty: Medium
Distance: 2-3 km
Overview:
Let’s head to Arakawa to paddle into the sunset and visit a local hot spring.
We’ll meet on the western side of the island at the calm waters of Arakawa bay to enjoy the sunset from the water. Within mainland Japan, the Goto Islands are Japan’s westernmost islands. And Fukue Island is the westernmost island of the Goto Islands. And Arakawa is on the western side of this westernmost island! So why is this important? Because, as the sun sets in the west, we’ll be the last people in mainland Japan to see the sunset!
Arakawa is a quaint town and popular fishing spot about 20 minutes outside of Fukue City. It’s also the location of one of Goto’s 3 Hot Springs, Arakawa Onsen. It’s a natural hot spring and the oldest hot spring in Goto. Although tourists also visit this hot spring, Arakawa is definitely more of a local spot.
We’ll meet 90 minutes before sunset to make sure we have plenty of time to get out on the water and explore the bay. After a loop around Gonsen Island, we’ll paddle out and enjoy the sunset from the sea. After that, we’ll paddle along the coast and head back to the Arakawa to enjoy a trip to the hot spring.
At Arakawa Hot Spring, you can soak yourself in a warm tub, rest your body, and wash off the sweat and salt water from your long day. We’ll say goodbye at the entrance of the hot spring so you can feel free to stay as long (or as short) as you’d like. There are only a few restaurants in Arakawa town but if you’d like to eat dinner at a local restaurant afterwards, let me know and I can help you make a reservation.
